Weissport Council questions condition of levee
A pier was replaced during the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge construction project in Weissport, and the result was a section of the borough's flood levee has been removed, a member of the borough council said Monday.
Arland Moyer Jr. was concerned whether the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which constructed the dike after a flood ravaged the borough in 1955, was notified of the matter. He said he is concerned about potential damage that could occur if heavy rain falls. The levee protects the borough from the Lehigh River, which runs parallel to the town. There have been past rains in which the Lehigh River level rose high enough to push against the levee.Moyer said the levee was last inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection during the summer. Periodic inspections occur by the state, and often the borough has been admonished for not keeping weeds cut or performing other needed maintenance. The bridge repair project began in the spring and is still going on.Council President Gene Kershner said another pier had concrete removed to expose rebar during the repair process. Despite such serious work, traffic is flowing as usual across the bridge, which is part of Route 209 and connects Routes 248 and 443."It's hard to believe all the traffic that is still moving on the bridge while they are doing the work," council member Brenda Leiby said.Moyer said he will contact the Corps of Engineers to make sure they were kept informed of the work to the levee. In other business:• The council was informed it has received a state recreation grant totaling $11,500 to construct a shed to store playground equipment. The letter informing the borough of the grant did not say when the money will be received.• Trick-or-treat night will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29 in the borough, from 6-8 p.m. Borough children can register to win prizes. The winners will be notified via an 8 p.m. telephone call and must be home when the call is made.• A letter was sent by code enforcement officer Duane Dellecker to a resident who has been burning smelly materials in the area of Prospect Street. Dellecker said in the letter that the resident can be fined $300 if he continues the practice. Enforcement would be by police.• A budget meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the borough hall.
