New parks commission member is introduced in Slatington
After not having had an official meeting for several months, Slatington's Parks and Recreation Commission had a lot to discuss Monday night, including the introduction of a brand-new member.
Chairman Robert Stettner began the meeting by welcoming newly appointed member Nathan Stubbs of Slatington, who will serve the standard three-year term.Stubbs was unanimously approved by borough council at its Oct. 13 meeting after commission member Dave Schnaars had told other council members that, though several people had expressed interest in joining the commission in the past, Stubbs was the first to submit a letter of interest to that effect."Good, good. I'm glad," member Jon Rinker said. For his own part, Stubbs later said he became interested in joining the commission after having helped out at the Slatington portion of the Delaware and Lehigh trail for the past two years.Stettner said one vacancy still remains on the commission.Next, Schnaars told members that, though it does not affect the commission directly, he wanted to let them know that the peer-to-peer study toward forming a regional recreational authority is moving forward and invited them to attend its next meeting at borough hall on today at 5 p.m.He said Walnutport, Washington Township and Slatington are now at the point of trying to get the articles of incorporation completed and that organization of the authority may occur as soon as the end of December, with the hopes of having a recreational professional on board by sometime next summer.Members then discussed the roof of the Victory Park pavilion.Rinker suggested they shingle it rather than put on a metal roof, namely because of the legalities involved in installing a metal one."Maybe we can find some volunteers in town to do it," Rinker suggested, adding that "you don't get volunteers unless you ask."Schnaars also suggested that Lehigh Carbon Community College may have a construction program with students that may want to participate.Rinker said it would likely be a springtime project, and both he and Schnaars said the project should not involve tall ladders and should be fairly easy to complete.Schnaars then said that, since he was getting ready to complete the commission's budget, they should decide whether or not to include the cost of the shingles. They chose to add $3,000.Also, the commission said a bicycle repair station, donated by Curt's Cyclery of Nazareth was recently installed at Slatington's downtown trailhead.Rinker called it "beautiful," noting it has tools on it and a place to hang a bike to change a tire."The guy did a nice job making it," Schnaars said.Rinker said Schnaars had contacted the bike shop and also physically helped install the station and thanked him for both efforts.
