Man asks for state prison term after pleading in drug case

A Monroe County man asked a county judge on Thursday to sentence him to a state prison term after pleading guilty to a drug charge. The presiding judge accommodated him.

He entered a guilty plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Matthew Scott Haydt, 26, of Kunkletown, and formerly of Lehighton, pleaded in two pending cases to charges of possession of chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine, terroristic threats and persistent disorderly conduct.Haydt told Nanovic he had a long history of drug abuse and said he started using meth when he was 16 years old. He said he wanted to be sentenced to the state system because it has many programs to help those addicted to drugs.Nanovic said, "It's sad that you have come to this point in your life and request a state sentence."Haydt was arrested on the drug count on July 29, when Lehighton police raided a home in the downtown business section. Police received information of a mobile meth lab being operated in the area. Haydt was arrested after he attempted to run away.When being arraigned on charges, he threatened the life of the arresting officers and caused a disturbance in the office of District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.Haydt is currently in the county prison finishing up a six-month sentence for a probation violation.Nanovic accommodated him on his request for a state prison term.On the threats charged he was sentenced to serve six to 18 months in a state correctional institution, concurrent with the sentence he is now serving in jail. On the conduct charge he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the other charges.On the drug count he was sentenced to serve one to two years in a state prison, consecutive to the other charges. He was also ordered to get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, make restitution of $175 for damage to a Lehighton police car, and supply a DNA sample.
