Condly, Capparell capture crowns

BARNESVILLE Jim Thorpe's Johnathan Condly and Marian's Tina Capparell have dominated their competition throughout much of the season.

It came as little surprise, then, that the two were once again well ahead of their rivals during Thursday's annual Schuylkill League Cross Country Championships at Tuscarora State Park.Condly claimed his second consecutive title, winning the boys race in 16:23, while Capparell continued her breakout freshman campaign by securing first in the girls race with a time of 19:29.Condly's victory, plus second and third place finishes by Dylan Bucior and Jacob Saxon, respectively, also helped Jim Thorpe take its second consecutive team title, as the Olympians finished with 45 points to second-place North Schuylkill's 87.The team success meant as much, or more, to Condly than any individual accomplishment."We've been talking about it for a while and that was our goal, to try and go one, two, three," the senior said. "It's an awesome achievement, and that's really what we were pushing for."The performance was one that longtime Jim Thorpe coach Drew Benyo wasn't sure was possible."They told me about a week and a half ago that that was their goal," he said. "I looked at them and said, 'Ok.' But in the back of mind, I wasn't sure if they could do it with the kind of competition we have in the Schuylkill League."But when they were on top of the hill, they were first (Condly), third (Bucior) and fourth (Saxon), and then they passed Mike (Blacketter, who finished fourth) of Lehighton."It's tremendously satisfying to know that they have that kind of ability, that kind of talent, and that they want to work that hard to reach the goals that they set for themselves. It's amazing."And it's an accomplishment Benyo certainly doesn't take for granted."It will never happen again," the coach said. "It's never happened to me in my 27 years (coaching) and, as long as I keep doing this, it will never happen again because I'm not doing this for another 27 years. I can't wait that long."They're a great group of kids. To finish first in this league two years in a row is really saying a lot."While the Olympians' remained on top in the boys' competition, Capparell's success ushered in a new area on the girls' side after Pottsville's Paige Stoner had dominated the division for the past four years.Capparell led wire-to-wire, crossing the line in 19:29, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Jess Yeneskie of North Schuylkill (20:22) and third-place finisher Kayley Kovac of Jim Thorpe (20:25).For Capparell, the race was simply about sticking to her plan and doing what she's done all year."I just like trying to get out fast in the beginning and then trying to focus on my pace. I just try to focus on that the entire time, " she said. "I'm very happy with how I did today."There was a lot of competition, and it's incredible to win this as a freshman."The convincing win was especially satisfying for Marian coach Jeremy Dormer."I knew she had a lot of talent coming in," Dormer said, "but I have to give 99.9 percent of the credit to her."We started training early in the summer, and she put in the miles during June, July and August to get to this point. I was just trying to build on what she already had. I'm very excited with how she's running right now."Led by fifth-place finisher Nichole Wasserleben, the Tamaqua girls took second in the team standings with 113 points to Blue Mountain, which used finishes of fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth to claim the title with 41 points. While satisfied with the result, Tamaqua coach Tom Kanger is hoping for more heading into next week's District 11 meet."I thought they did well, but I still think they can run better," he said. "We all wish we would have pushed Blue Mountain a little bit more. But we had really nice performances today by several girls, and I'm very happy with that."The Lehighton boys and girls each took third in the team standings, with 95 and 141 points, respectively.BOYS1.
