Brockton woman killed in Tamaqua crash

An accident in front of the Tamaqua ABC High Rise on Wednesday night has claimed the life of a Brockton woman.

Laura Ziolko was crossing Broad Street at 6:38 p.m., walking north, when she was struck by a passing car.According to the police report, Ziolko, who was walking with a cane, was crossing the street and walked in front of a vehicle traveling east.That driver, seeing oncoming traffic traveling west, flashed his lights in an effort to warn other motorists about the pedestrian. It was too late.A westbound vehicle, operated by Scott Yasson of Lansford, struck the woman as she entered his lane of traffic.A heavy rain was falling at the time of the accident. According to police and witnesses, Ziolko had a large black and blue bruise to her forehead, but was conscious when she was placed in a Tamaqua Ambulance to be transported to St. Luke's Miners Hospital in Coaldale.They also say she was approximately 82 feet from the nearest crosswalk and that Yasson was driving at a speed that was reasonable for conditions.Tamaqua Patrolman Michael Hobbs is the investigating officer.
