Marian announces first six Hall inductees

The Marian High School Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Capriotti's in Tresckow.

The banquet will begin with a cocktail hour at 3 p.m, dinner will be at 4 p.m. and inductions will follow.Following are six members of the 2014 Hall of Fame class. The Times News will feature the other six inductees. Later this week. They are Bill Sakusky, Brad Shanfelt, Mary Rose Delpero Trump, Wally Yext, Jeff Nietz and John "Doc" Fallabel.Dave AngeloDave is a Tamaqua native who graduated from Marian High School in 1983 after which he went on to play football at Catholic University of America from which he graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in 1987. At Marian, Dave was a multi-sport letter winner in football - 3 years, basketball - 2 years, baseball - 2 years and track - 1 year, earning 8 varsity letters. In football, Dave was a member of the 1980 Southern Conference Champions and the 1981 Southern Conference runner-up. Dave was co-captain of the 1982 Colts and earned 1st team All County, 1st team All Region and Honorable Mention All-State. In his senior year, Dave led the area in interceptions with 9 and was selected to the Schuylkill County All-Star Team and was named MVP Defensive Player. In basketball, Dave was a two-year varsity and scored over 650 points in his varsity career and was selected to the Schuylkill League All-Star team. Dave was a 2 year started in baseball and took time to participate in track for 1 year. Dave graduated from Marian in 1983 ranked 11 in his class while serving as an officer in the National Honor Society and Marian Student Council. At Catholic University, Dave was a four-year starter at defensive back and was captain of the 1986 team and graduated with a Civil Engineering degree. Dave has had a successful career in Engineering Construction Management and Engineering Sales and is currently Vice-President of Bridgeport Insurance Group in Wayne, PA. Dave and his wife Lynda and their children Kailyn and Daniel reside in West Chester, PA. Dave continues to be involved with community and CYO programs and has been coaching various athletic programs for the past 12 years and attributes much of his in-volvement to the experience which Marian High School offered him.Mike HosakThis Tamaqua native was a three year starter at guard, tight end and various defensive positions and a key member of the 1989 District XI and 1990 State Championship teams He was a four-year member of the track program and a two year par-ticipant in basketball. He was selected second team All-State linebacker in his Senior year and First team defense by the Times Leader, Pottsville Republican, and Standard Speaker.In his Senior year Mike led his team in receptions, averaging 18.9 yards per catch while scoring 6 TDs. He also had 101 tackles, 16 sacks and was chosen to the Schuylkill County All-Star team and a Big 33 nominee. Mike received a full scholarship to Northeastern University in Boston where he lettered for three years. He played defensive end as a junior and tight end as a senior. He graduated fro Northeastern in 1996 as the Scholar athlete with a B.S. Degree in Physical Therapy. Mike earned his Clinical Doctorate from Temple in 2008 and is currently the Clinical Director at VSAS Orthopedics in Allentown. Mike and his wife Allison and their two sons Ethan and Lucas reside in Breinigsville.Brian KennedyBrian is a Summit Hill native, and a four year member of the Colt football team; a two year letter winner in basket-ball and a 1993 District 11 Champion in the 400 meter dash. Brian was the backup quarterback on the 1990 State Championship team and in his next three seasons the start-er. He led the Colts to a 29-7-1 record, Eastern Conference Championship in 1992 and a District Championship in 1993. Brian finished his high school career with 253 completions, 4.100 passing yards, 42 passing TD;s and 9 rush-ing TD's. His Junion year the Colts were 12-1. He complet-ed 74 passes for 1448 yards, 17 TD. His senior year the Colts were 11-2. He com-pleted 110 passes for 1,512 yards ans 14 TD's and finished the year first in yards from scrimmage. Brian also played safety on defense and had 3 interceptions. Brian received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and attended Academy Prep School prior to enrolling at Annapolis. At the Naval Academy Brian played three seasons as the backup QB and as a sophomore played in the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii where Navy defeated California 42-38. Brian played one more season before shoul-der surgery ended his career. Following graduation Brian served as a Naval Supply Officer for 6 years, including nine months in the Arabian Gulf. He resigned his Com-mission in 2005 and currently lives in Pittsburgh with his wife Eleni and their two sons Liam and Connell.Mark MakovecThis Lake Hauto native graduated in 1994 as a multi-sport athlete who earned a total of nine varsity letters, including four in football and three in basketball. Mark was a four-year start-ed in football as a strong safety, running back and linebacker. As a freshmen he was a member of the State Championship team and in 1992 led the Colts to an Eastern Conference Championship and earned 2nd team All-State honors. As a senior Mark was a Captain on the 1993 District Championship team and was named 1st team All-State and Times News Play-er of the Year. In basketball Mark was a three-year starter and finished his high school career with 1,400 points and was named 2nd team All-State. Mark earned many awards including Anthracite Player of the year, Male athlete and player of the year. Mark accepted a full scholarship to Wake Forest where he earned four football letters and saw considerable playing time as both an inside and outside linebacker. Mark graduated with a B.S. in Health and Exercise Science in 1998 and a Master in Arts and Education in 1999. Mark taught and coached football and track. He earned an Education Specialist degree from George Washington and moved into a administration as Assistant Principal at Granly High School for 4 years and Norview High School for 4 years He continued in the Doctorate Program and received his Doctorate in Education from George Washing-ton in 2008. He is currently principal at Northside Middle School in Norfolk Va, He and his wife Allison live in Virginia Beach with their sons Mason, Morgan and Mark.John PieraciniA Mcadoo native, Jack graduated in 1994 with 9 varsity letters. Three each in football, basketball and baseball. As a senior he was co-captain in all three sports. In football, he was a member of the Eastern Conference Champions in 1992 and the District Champions in 1993. In '93 he had 155 tackles, was named line-backer of the year, All Anthracite First Team and Big 33 nomi-nee. In Basketball he was am member Schuylkill League Divi-sion Champions in 1992 and 1994. As the Clean-up hitter , he led the Colts to the Schuylkill League Division Championship and named Schuylkill League player of the year. Jack attended Fordham University on a football scholarship and graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science. At Fordham he earned 4 football letters, and received the Edward Danowski Award given to the senior athlete for their leadership, sacrifice and commitment to excellence both on the field of play and within the University community. Jack was the Captain of the team his senor year and holds the Fordham record with 385 career tackles and is the only Fordham linebacker to record over 100 tackles in 3 consecu-tive years. He is currently Vice President of the Fordham Football Gridiron Club, and in 2008 was inducted into the Fordham Athletic Hall of Fame, a group which includes Vince Lombardi and the "Seven Blocks of Granite" In 1999 he was in-ducted into the Fordham Wall of Fame, one of 15 members inducted for outstand-ing characteristics on and off the field. Jack currently serves as the IBM Wall St Account Manager with over 14 years of experience in new business development and software sales. He is a 10 time recipient of the IBM 100 percent Club.Brian RaffertyBrian is a 1991 graduate who currently resides in Lake Harmony. He was a four-year letterman and Co-Captain of the 1990 State Championship Colts. He was an outstanding two-way player who scored 13 TD's and had 163 tackles. He was a Big 33 nominee who was recognized on several All-State and All-County teams for his offensive and defen-sive prowess. In 1991 Brian was chosen as the Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete and is the only Marian nominee to achieve that honor, Brian served as Vice President of Stu-dent Council, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Brian accept-ed an Academic/Athletic scholarship to Lehigh where he played two years for the Mountain Hawks until a concussion ended his career. Brian graduated from Lehigh in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Geologic Science and Environmen-tal Science. He has 19 years in environmental and engineering consulting with a wide range of responsibilities ranging from project scientist regional manager and business owner.
