Maple and oak trees burst into color, seeming to salute the white marble Civil War monument Monday at Soldiers Circle, Tamaqua. The towering tribute to heroes was built in 1870 by the Doubleday Post of the Grand Army of the Republic and has been standing sentinel for 144 years. The stone is engraved with names of Tamaqua's Civil War dead. The resting place of those men and veterans of later wars encircle the monument.
