Ground game leads Marian
Superior line play and a strong running game have been Schuylkill Haven's formula for success year-in and year-out.
But on Friday night, the Hurricanes were beat at their own game.Dominating in the trenches and piling up over 400 yards on the ground, Marian rolled to a 40-17 Anthracite League victory to snap a three-game losing streak."This one is totally on our players," said Colt head coach Stan Dakosty. "After three tough losses they came to work every day and put the time in. They're grinders and it paid off today. I'm so proud of them. Our kids played so well."The whole offensive unit played well. (K.J.) Snerr had a big game, (Nick) Sully broke a big one and we threw the ball well ... Defensively, they didn't score in the second half. It's great to win this way because we got momentum in the second half and kept things going."Actually, the Colts (4-3) grabbed that all-important momentum late in the second quarter. Trailing for most of the first half, Snerr broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run with 2:10 left until halftime. The tally put the home team in front by an 18-17 score and began a string of 28 unanswered points.Snerr, who finished with 266 yards rushing in the contest, reached the end zone again on his first carry of the second half getting free for a 68-yard scamper."Our line played absolutely phenominal," said Snerr. "They played a huge role in our win tonight. We had a lot of pent-up anger after the last three games so to let it out in this game felt pretty good."Forcing Haven out of its typical running game also felt good for the Colts. The visitors relied on William Casella on their first two possessions, as the senior got loose for touchdown runs of 57 and 36 yards within the first four minutes of the game. After that, though, Marian's defense adjusted to the ground game.Led by linebacker Nick Sully, the Colts became more stingy against the run. In fact, in the second half the Hurricanes' play-calling consisted of just 11 runs and 17 passes."We made some adjustments at halftime and brought more guys in the box," said Dakosty. "We also did a better job of tackling and controlled the tempo. Our goal was to take them out of their comfort zone. They like to shorten the game and run the clock.""In the first half we had a couple let-ups but we went into the locker room at halftime and the coaches gave us some keys," said Sully. "During the second half, we knew what was coming and we reacted to it. We executed and that's how we won the game."Momentum was a huge factor. We only had a one-point lead at the half but we knew if we played even harder (in the second half) we'd have this game in the bag."Sully helped preserve the victory by adding a 65-yard tally late in the third quarter, while an Ethan Kuczynski 69-yard gain set up his own one-yard touchdown."They ran hard and had good execution," said Haven mentor Mike Farr. "We knew where they were going to go and had kids there but we didn't make plays. Marian deserves to win, though. They played harder than we did. We had the momentum and they came right back. That's what good team do."When we got down 16 points we had no choice. We had to throw. That's just not our M.O. and that's not what we do."Besides the running game, Marian's Kuczynski also threw for 132 yards including a 65-yard pass and run by Aaron DeAngelo on the Colts' first play from scrimmage."This had playoff implications for districts," said Dakosty. "But we still have a long way to go."
