Students add some more color to Summit

Fall is known for its beauty outdoors, but there was no shortage of color inside The Summit Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lehighton on Thursday.

Students from Lehighton Area High School Art Honor Society joined the residents to create watercolor paintings which will later be displayed throughout the home."Part of our mission is to spread joy to the community through art while making connections with its residents," said Mike Reenock, Lehighton High School art teacher. "This is our first stop as we really want to be seen more in the community. It teaches our students responsibility and how to show respect for the people around them."Laughter could be heard throughout the Summit's first-floor dining room as residents painted things such as houses and sailboats while enjoying the colorful lessons from a younger generation.Students came from a mix of grades nine through 12."The students are doing a one-to-one with the residents, and I think our residents really enjoy that," said Mary Dennis, activities director at the home. "They are very responsive, and it's been working out great. Even those who don't want to paint are listening to the students and have been extremely attentive."Riley Schaeffer, a Lehighton High School senior, said the event gives students a chance to get outside of the school and interact with others."Connecting with the older residents is good for us because it gives us a sense of helping others, and hopefully we're bringing some enjoyment into their lives," she said.Thursday marked the first time the art students have visited the nursing home, but Reenock hopes it isn't the last."We'd love to make this a regular thing," he said. "It gives the students a sense of pride and really lifts up the residents. Today is a win-win."
