Woman, boy safe after wandering off Appalachian Trail

A Lehigh Valley woman and 11 year-old-boy were the center of a search Thursday evening after they reported being lost atop the Blue Mountain for six hours.

At 5 p.m. the East Penn fire company, Lehighton paramedics, East Penn police and the Carbon County Emergency Management were dispatched to the parking lot of the Bake Oven Knob to set up a command center and begin a search for the pair.

They had entered the Appalachian Trail before noon and traveled east but at some point left the trail and wandered along the north face of the mountain. At approximately 6 p.m. they wondered out onto a roadway and made their way to a nearby home.

The resident was aware of the search and drove the pair to the parking lot. The woman was interviewed by East Penn police and a state trooper from Bethlehem before being reunited with her family.
