State police: Woman lost $250,000 in lottery scam

ROCKVIEW, Pa. (AP) - State police have been trying to determine who cheated a central Pennsylvania woman out of more than $250,000 in a lottery scam.

Troopers from the Rockview barracks say someone began calling the woman in December, telling her she had won the New York Mega Millions lottery.

The caller convinced the woman to send them $150 to cover taxes or other fees, then continued to call back seeking more payments, supposedly to cover the out-of-state taxes on her winnings.

The woman tells police she drained $195,000 from her savings, then took out a $100,000 loan and paid part of that the caller before alerting police who explained she's been scammed.

Police are hoping someone with information about the con will contact them.
