JT, Tamaqua fall in second round

OREFIELD - Sometimes, success can't be determined by wins and losses.

Every so often, the true measure of what one accomplished simply can't be ascertained through any triumph or setback.Such was the case Wednesday afternoon at Parkland High School, where teams from Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua took part in the District 11 Class AA girls' doubles tennis tournament.Despite the fact that all four teams from the two schools were eliminated after the first day of play, there were still many positives to be taken from the experience for all involved. The pairings of Tamaqua's Maddie Dolinsky and Allison Pedersen, and Jim Thorpe's Gabbie Binder and Hope Damian, each earned victories in the first round before bowing out of the tournament. The victory certainly didn't come easy for Dolinsky and Pedersen, who trailed the Saucon Valley team of Hannah Maykut and Lauren Skillinge 5-2 in the first set of their first round match before rallying for a 7-5, 6-1 win.Even though the two didn't play together all that often during the season, Pedersen and Dolinsky credited their teamwork for helping them persevere in what proved to be a difficult match."We knew that we had to bring it back, and I think we did really well with that," said Pedersen. "And we did notice that when we were winning points, it definitely seemed to get into the other team's (Saucon Valley's) head."Added Dolinsky, "We stayed consistent at first, and just warmed up to them. And I think our talking and communication definitely helped us today."That cooperation was evident once again in a 6-4, 6-2 second round loss to Nicole Koscielniak and Rachel LeGendre of Notre Dame East Stroudsburg, where Pedersen and Dolinsky had the No. 4 seed on their heels throughout much of the match.Despite the early exit, Dolinsky was happy just to have one more chance in the tournament."I think we did a lot better than we expected," the senior said. "We worked really well together and stayed consistent, and that's all you can ask for."It just really means a lot to get here in my last year. Working with Ally (Pedersen) was awesome and I thought we played really well together. It was great to make it to the second round; that's what I really wanted."The Jim Thorpe duo of Binder and Damian advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tamaqua's Beth Kistler and Jasmine Mena.Like Pedersen and Dolinsky, Binder was on the same courts a week ago for the District 11 Class AA singles tournament, something she thought gave her an advantage in the first round match."I knew that I would have a little bit more experience, just from some of the matches that I've been playing in recently," said Binder.Damian, however, was not in the tournament last week and knew that she would need to be at her best for the pair to move on."I knew I was pretty even with the girl I was matching up against," the junior said. "So I knew that it was going to be kind of tough, but I knew we could do it."Binder and Damian had a tough draw with a second round match against No. 3 seed Marina Zardet and Sabrina Elward of Allentown Central Catholic.Even though they lost 6-1, 6-0, Binder still enjoyed herself in what will be the last tournament of her scholastic career."I love playing doubles," the senior said. "It's just so different from singles; there are more angles; there's more room to hit the ball. And you're playing with somebody else, which is totally different."It's nice to be able to talk to somebody and have them bring you up when you're down. It was a lot of fun."While Jim Thorpe coach Norb Lienhard will lose Binder, he seems to have a lot to look forward to with several players, including Damian, to next year's squad."Even in that last match, I could see the confidence start growing in Hope as more shots were working for her," said Lienhard. "I could see it building in her throughout the match."When she came off the court, I told her she has to take today and start from here next year. I know she can do it."Tamaqua's third doubles pair of Amy Gardiner and Brooke Dehart lost 7-6, 6-4 to Saucon Valley's Amanda Blazka and Taylor Wasem in the first round.
