CNN says Frein letter found; trooper slams network use of 'sources'

Have investigators found a confession letter written by Eric Frein?

Cable television network CNN reported this afternoon that a "senior law enforcement official" told them that police discovered a letter describing how the Canadensis man allegedly shot two state troopers last month, leaving one dead and one severely injured.

In a tersely worded e-mail to the media that followed, Pennsylvania State Police offered no comment, but took a swipe at the network.

"As previously stated, I am not commenting on evidence found unless it poses a threat to the community," Trooper Thomas R. Kelly wrote.

"I understand some networks are reporting information obtained through sources. This is the only official source and I cannot confirm anything reported by 'sources,'" Kelly added.

The CNN report said officials did not reveal where or when the letter was found, but that it does contain details they believe confirm its authenticity - although no motive is mentioned.

The search for Frein has concentrated on a 5-square-mile area for weeks, hoping to capture the 31-year-old man accused of killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson, of Dunmore, and injuring Trooper Trooper Alex T. Douglass, of Olyphant, ambushing them outside the Blooming Grove barracks on Sept. 12.

On Sunday, the search covered a mile-and-a-half area of Monroe County after state police received a report of a possible sighting of Frein.
