Thorpe erupts in second half

Mark Rosenberger has given many halftime speeches in his career.

Some have probably been encouraging. Some have dealt with making adjustments. And others may have even been heated. On Friday night, Rosenberger's intermission talk was a combination of all three. After playing to a scoreless tie against underdog Panther Valley, the longtime Jim Thorpe head coach got his point across in numerous ways. And the message proved to be effective. The Olympians scored on their first two possessions of the second half and went on to post a 27-6 Anthracite League victory. The win allowed Thorpe to stay undefeated at 6-0."We pushed some buttons, that's for sure," said Rosenberger of his talk at halftime. "But with that being said, we also regained some composure and calmed back down. We let them know that we have confidence in them and that we thought we were the better team. We told them we just have to come out and execute."Give credit to Panther Valley. They played hard. Coach (Matt) Davis did a great job preparing his kids but we have to stop killing ourselves week in and week out offensively. We're just not making plays that we should be making. We had too many mistakes in the first half. We have to clean it up."After three unsuccessful possessions in the first half possessions that included dropped passes, a fumble, and untimely penalties the Olympians took the second half kickoff and marched down the field for the game's first score.Big gains by Kevin Vitti and Robert Heller led to a 62-yard drive that ended with Heller's 10-yard touchdown run. After a quick three-and-out by an Olympian defense that again turned in an outstanding effort, Thorpe's offense moved 41 yards in six plays to extend its lead to 14-0. Heller provided the key run in the drive, breaking free for a 24-yard pickup that set up Vitti's one-yard dive into the end zone."Vitti ran the ball extremely well for us tonight," said Rosenberger. "He gave us some momentum and had some great runs. We were able to get Heller going there with some misdirection stuff. Early on they were hurting us with their interior guys. They were getting penetration which was hurting our counter game. We were able to stop the penetration in the second half and it created some space and holes for us to run the ball."Heller, whose 47-yard tally with 4:38 left to play pushed the score to 20-0, finished the night with 173 yards on the ground. Of those yards, 144 of them came in the second half. As a team, the Olympians had 310 yards rushing with 209 of them coming in the final two quarters."For as happy as we were, I'm sure they were that upset it was a 0-0 game at halftime," said Davis. "We knew they were going to come out swinging and they did. I still think our kids responded pretty well. We gave up some drives, but we also came up with some stops."I was pleased with how we played the whole game. Our effort was awesome. We got a little dinged up and we're thin to begin with but I thought our execution, for the most part, was great."The Panthers (1-5) used their running attack in the first half to stay even with their opponent. Rian Shubeck came up with a big gain on a fake punt on PV's first possession and had another huge gain on a draw play to help move the sticks and keep field position in their favor. But Shubeck, who had 90 yards rushing in the first half, suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter and was forced to sit out the rest of the game."Rian does not get the credit he deserves," said Davis. "He's the guy that makes us go and he's tough to replace. In our gameplan tonight we thought he could have a real big night for us, and he was (until he got hurt)."Combining Shubeck's absence and the Olympians' stellar defense, the Panthers managed just 22 yards on 21 plays in that second half.PV's only score came on special teams as Ali Capobianco followed Heller's second TD run with a 95-yard kickoff return."We're 6-0 and we're really happy to be 6-0 but we can't be satisfied with these efforts the past few weeks where we're making mistakes," said Rosenberger, whose team closed out the scoring on Antonio Madera's 32-yard run with 1:37 left to play. "I have to give props to our defense because they played tough. The fake punt was a great play by them and put us on our heels a little bit, but our defense did the job again tonight."
