Lehighton Borough still faced with vacancies on committees

Despite its decision to fill one open seat, a pair of vacancies still exist on several Lehighton Borough committees.

At a special meeting on Tuesday, borough council voted 6-0 to appoint Richard Zimmerman to the zoning hearing board. Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.Zimmerman's term expires Dec. 31, 2018.Even with that, a vacancy still exists on the zoning board, according to borough Manager Nicole Beckett, who said the borough will accept letters of interest from those who wish to fill the remaining vacancy.Also on Tuesday, council accepted Jeff Bachman's resignation from the Police Civil Service Commission, effective immediately.Beckett said Bachman chose to resign due to other commitments.Whomever is selected to fill that post will do so until the term expires Dec. 31, 2019.As a result, the borough will also accept letters of interest from individuals who wish to fill that seat as well.Also on Tuesday, Beckett updated council on the ACE Grant Compliance Letter to help enable Lehighton Area School District apply for Department of Community and Economic Development funding.Last week, council granted its approval of the letter.Beckett clarified to council that the approval is for the district's high school and middle school alterations, and not for its proposed $32.5 million K-5 primary elementary center, as she previously stated.In other business, council:• Adopted a resolution that establishes fees for the Joint Board of Appeals.• Adopted a resolution to amend the fee schedule.• Adopted a resolution that pertains to the General Municipal Pension System State Aid.• Agreed to release funds to the borough Fireman's Relief Association.
