Bears fall short against PM West

Chances on the pitch aren't worth much unless they are fully taken advantage of.

Although Pleasant Valley more than doubled Pocono Mountain West in scoring opportunities, the scoreboard didn't favor the Lady Bears as the final horn sounded. Thanks to two first half goals, Pocono Mountain West fended off Pleasant Valley in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match, 2-1.The momentum was fully in Pleasant Valley's favor during the first ten minutes of the match. The Lady Bears compiled four corners and three shots on goal during this time period. The ball was in the West box and well within striking distance of a Lady Bear goal for a majority of the first portion of the game. Both coaches agreed that this sequence could have dictated the match toward a different direction."We had plenty of chances in the first fifteen minutes," said Pleasant Valley head coach Timothy Hinton. "If we put one or two of them in, it's a whole different game. The chances were there, but it was one of those games where we didn't finish and they (Pocono Mountain West) did."West head coach Dave Lawrence noted, "We gave up way too many corners in the first half that were uncontested and could have wrapped up the game. Fortunately for us, they didn't capitalize and we limited them in the second half."The tables turned shortly after a sequence midway through first period when West keeper Aubrie Jaworowski saved a Pleasant Valley shot from a corner. Jaworowski immediately pounced on another Lady Bear blast off of the rebound, which was another one of her seven saves in the match."I really don't know how the ball didn't find the net," said Lawrence. "Some of those shots were from a point-blank distance. Her saves were crucial in the first half. Aubrie has great cat-like instincts and she was surely huge for us tonight."Jaworowski's gutsy performance in the net seemed to boost the confidence and morale of the rest of her team. The Lady Panthers gained more possession of the ball and put together a few threatning counter attacks in the latter part of the first half.West showed great communication on these counter-runs up the field, as the squad used the lead pass to their advantage to get behind the Pleasant Valley defense. The team work led to a Nicole Brigante goal at the 23rd minute, and a Teresa Besser score with just five minutes left in the first half. Lawrence's squad had just four shots on goal and two corners in the contest, but made the most of their opportunities."Nicky's effort was tremendous today. We pulled her from the top to give us a spark in the middle later in the match. Teresa (Besser) and Catherine (Gonzalez) also both helped out a great deal tonight."A Panther foul led to a Pleasant Valley free kick with ten minutes left in the game. Jamie Masullo sent a bomb from about 35 yards out, which found the upper 90 and brought the Lady Bears back within a goal."It's been a struggle to score, but we need to start finding ways to find the back of the net. Owning possession is great, but when it comes down to it, you have to score." explained the Pleasant Valley coach.West was able to contain the Pleasant Valley attack during the final ten minutes and preserve the well deserved win. The West victory happened to be Lawrence's first ever victory over Pleasant Valley during his ten-year tenure with the program."We have to understand that if we don't have anything left in the gas tank toward the end of the game, we have to use the touch lines and corners of the pitch to help run off some time. Both teams have a lot on the line right now. I'm proud of the way the girls played until the final whistle. I like this group a lot. The girls work hard and enjoy spending time playing soccer together."
