Four local golfers advance to district championship

It's been the "Cole Miller Show" on the local golf scene the past couple of years in The Times news coverage area.

With Miller now at Penn State University after ending his Northwestern high school career, the big question was who was going to step up and grab the reigns as the top golfer in the area.During Monday's District 11 qualifying round at Mahoning Valley Country Club, four golfers advanced to Monday's District 11 Championship to be held at Shawnee Inn and Country Club.Pleasant Valley's Ryan Adamonis shot a round of 84 to just make the Class AAA cutoff that was an 85.Northwestern Lehigh's Zak Caruso (89), Tamaqua's Carson Schoener (90) and Marian's Albert McFadden (90) made the Class AA cutoff of 95."I didn't start off too good," said Caruso. "I started with three double bogeys, then I went par and had five birdies in a row. On the back nine, I played alright, but I didn't do what I wanted to do, especially on eight and nine. but I made it to the next round."Schoener felt he played the front nine fairly well shooting four over."I started on Hole 15 and the first four holes were a little rough," he said. "Coming around the back, 10 and 11 were also tough, but I pulled through on the last three holes on the back to make the cut."I birdied both five and six, they were my two best holes of the day."McFadden wasn't happy with his round on the Marian home course, but is glad he gets to play another week."My perfect hole, shockingly was the par five, No. 14," said McFadden. "I hit a perfect drive and a nice little four iron. I hit it on the green, but it didn't check at all. It was on the fringe and I chipped in to make birdie on the hole."I played alright, I didn't hit the ball that well, but I move on."Lehighton's Erik Reichard missed the cut in AAA, while Marian's Michael Latoff and Palmerton's Josh Swartz missed the cut in AA.

Marian's Albert McFadden eyes up a putt during Monday's District qualifier. McFadden fired a 90 to advance to the next round.
