Late Eagles' TD sinks Colts
If it was a baseball game, Marian would have been charged with a blown save.
Holding a slim lead late in their Anthracite Football League game with Blue Mountain, the Colts let several chances to close out a win slip away. The Eagles made them pay. Thanks to a big defensive stand and a couple of huge plays by quarterback Sean Greenawalt, Blue Mountain rallied for a 17-14 victory on Friday night."We just didn't finish," said Marian coach Stan Dakosty. "I thought we played much better than we did last week against North Schuylkill and we put ourselves in a position to get the win. It was a matter of finishing things out and we didn't do it."If we get a couple of first downs late in the game, we have a chance to run out the clock. Defensively, we were in position to make some plays on their last drive and didn't get the job done. That's the difference between a win and a loss."While Marian struggled to close, Blue Mountain's Greenawalt finished out the game like Mariano Rivera in his prime.Trailing 14-10 with just over six minutes remaining, the Eagles' defense came up big, forcing Marian into a three-and-out after the Colts had taken over at midfield.Greenawalt then came in and sealed the victory.First, he rolled right looking to pass. With no one open, he avoided several Colt rushers, tucked the ball, cut back across the field, and jumped started the winning drive with a 35-yard run.Two plays later, Greenawalt once again rolled right. This time he found Christian Gosch open in the flat and drilled a pass to him. Gosch also broke a couple of tackles and raced down the sideline for a 27-yard touchdown with just 2:39 remaining."Sean Greenawalt is just an athlete," said Blue Mountain coach Cory Mabry. "He made the plays when we needed them in the fourth quarter."On his long run, we actually had the same play called that we ran later in the drive for the touchdown. But when the pass wasn't there, he just pulled it down and found a way to make a play. He's not going to be an all-county passer. But when he needed to complete the pass at the end he did that too."Marian had one final possession, but could never overcome a first down sack and turned the ball deep in their own territory on downs, allowing the Eagles to run out the clock.Blue Mountain's rally was needed after the Colts cashed in on the Eagles' only turnover of the night.Trailing 10-6 early in the fourth quarter, Marian got a fumble recovery from Jacob Paluck to jump start it's go-ahead touchdown drive.K.J. Snerr was the workhorse as he carried five straight times on the 31-yard touchdown march. The TD came on a five-yard run with 9:44 left in the game.Marian's celebration turned out to be short-lived, however, as Greenawalt's big plays "saved" the Eagles (3-2)."Our kids showed a lot of heart" said Mabry. "They're resilient. They keep battling and tonight they found a way."Meanwhile, after starting the season with three straight victories, the Colts have now dropped back-to-back games."I'm proud of our effort," said Dakosty. "I thought we battled them toe-to-toe. Blue Mountain is a good team. In the end we just came up a little short."
