Bombers bounce back against ND

How can a team 'bounce back' from a one-point, heart-breaking loss?

If the Palmerton Blue Bomber football program was to answer, the remedy includes a 47-8 mercy rule win over their next opponent. After a great week of practice, the Bombers overcame a slow start to devastate Notre Dame of Green Pond in nearly every facet of the contest, en route to the easy win.Led by sophomore quarterback Garrett Perschy, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 185 yards and had four passing TDs and a rushing score, Palmerton executed a 'statement win' over the Crusaders to put themselves back on the right track."(The win) was huge," Perschy said. "The entire week at practice, we knew we had to respond. We didn't play that well at Palisades and had a lot of missed opportunities. But I think we had a great week and we came out and showed it tonight.""Coach was telling us that this would be a big statement game," senior wideout Dominic Shivone added. "The whole team took that loss last week really tough, so this week, we knew we had to get back to work."In the opening drive of the game, Notre Dame looked to make its own statement by driving down the field for a score to begin the evening. After a two-point pass conversion, the scoreboard read 8-0, and Bomber coach Walkowiak knew what needed to be done."We're not happy with the slow start," the coach said. "(Notre Dame) scored there, and we were flat and I let the kids know about that, coming off the field. But I love how they responded to that situation."Immediately, the Bombers moved the ball with success, driving 68 yards in 12 plays for a score. On a fourth-and-five from the 19, Perschy connected with Zach Buck in the corner of the end zone for the score. Two possessions later, the Palmerton air attack proved effective again, as Perschy found Shivone up the middle for a 18-yard scoring toss. A second consecutive failed conversion, though left the score 12-8 Palmerton with 10:25 left before half.Another Crusader punt yielded another Bomber scoring drive, in which sophomore Mike Stasko carried the offensive load, as he carried three times and capped off the drive with a 37-yard reception. The Crusaders punted again, and 12 plays later, Shivone caught his second TD reception of the night - a 37-yarder, giving Palmerton a 26-8 edge with 1:47 left before half.Rai Washington made his presence known on the next Crusader drive, as he recovered a fumble that gave his team first and goal on the five. Perschy darted in for the score and at the intermission, Palmerton led 33-8.In the second half, the Crusaders were stalled and attempted a punt; however it was blocked and soared straight up in the air. The Blue Bombers' Cody Reitz hauled it in for a score in the end zone for a 40-8 swell.Tre Nelson trounced in from the eight on the Bombers' next drive for the final score of the night, as the mercy rule went into effect. With Southern Lehigh looming on the Bombers' schedule next week, the "football doctors" have prescribed another great week of practice to Walkowiak's squad."Southern Lehigh is very well-coached and we're going to have to step it up," he stated. "We'll prepare for the wing-T and they have a defense that flies around the field. We'll talk about what we need to do and then go to work."
