Lehighton seeks funds for parks

Lehighton plans to use grant money to make improvements to its downtown parks.

Borough Manager Nicole Beckett briefly discussed funding for the parks that surround the borough municipal building with borough council on Monday.After the meeting, Beckett said the borough had received a $350,000 Department of Community and Economic Development multimodal grant for its lower park, which requires a 30 percent match. The borough will be responsible for contributing $105,000, and the state will contribute $245,000, she said.Beckett said the borough had applied for the funding when the transportation enhancement funding had been withdrawn by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The original grant did not require a match, she said.Additionally, Beckett said the borough has also applied for the PennDOT multimodal grant, as well as the PennDOT Transportation Assistance Program.She said borough has received $250,000 from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.The grants will be used for upgrades such as sidewalk repairs, walkway upgrades, lighting, fountain repairs, ADA accessibility and landscaping, Beckett said.
