Kloap leads Fillies past JT
Marian's talent can be intimidating.
But its depth might be even scarier. The defending state champion Fillies are in the midst of an unbeaten Schuylkill League campaign that has seen them post sweep and after sweep.Thursday night against Jim Thorpe, Marian played without middle hitter Abby Stankiewitch - the team's leader in kills, blocks and hitting percentage. But the Fillies didn't miss a beat.Marian plugged Cassandra Hoben and Jasmine Mooney into Stankiewitch's spot and let senior setter Abby O'Donnell take it from there. The result was a 25-9, 25-13, 25-12 rout of Jim Thorpe."We have so much depth," said Marian coach John "Doc" Fallabel. "We have five outstanding hitters, great servers all over the place, an outstanding group of back line players … Sometimes the toughest part of coaching this group is trying to find playing time for everyone."I think it showed tonight. When you can play without someone as talented as Abby (Stankiewitch) and still dominate the match it says a lot about your depth."Fallabel said he didn't alter the game plan without his starting middle hitter. Instead he let veteran setter O'Donnell make the decisions about where to go with the ball."Abby is just so smart on the court. She's like another coach," said Fallabel. "Tonight, she decided without Stankiewitch here that she was going to rely more on our outside hitters. That obviously turned out to be a great idea."With the majority of the sets going outside, Alex Stroia (eight kills) and Emily Pilla (six kills) both had strong games. But no one benefitted from the strategy more than Maureen Kloap.Kloap, a 5-6 junior jumping jack, had 15 kills - the majority of them being powerfully hammered off the court. She added nine digs, two blocks and two aces for an all-around performance that left her coach marveling."That was Maureen's best performance of the season," said Fallabel. "She was all over the court."Offensively she was incredible. She had a monster game as far as hitting percentage is concerned. A good hitting percentage is somewhere between .200 and .300. Tonight, she hit .584. That's unbelievable."Kloap credited a little extra motivation for her perextra motivation for her performance."I'm from Jim Thorpe, so I'm friends with a lot of the girls on their team," said Kloap. "I was pretty pumped up for this match."Abby (O'Donnell) did a great job of feeding me and I was able to get in a good rhythm. Once I got a couple of hits down, I was able to get on a nice roll."Kloap had three kills and four service points in the opening game as the Fillies rolled 25-9. Danielle Spillman had seven service points in the opening game for Marian, including a game-ending ace.In game two, Lauren Neitz had an early six-point service run as the Fillies jumped ahead 10-2. Kloap had eight kills in the game while Stroia added three. The final game was the most competitive early on as Jim Thorpe (3-6, 5-8) was within 10-6 thanks to some strong net play from Mackenzie Walck. But the Fillies quickly took charge as the net play of Hoben, Stroia and Emily Pilla keyed a 7-1 spurt that broke the game open. Stroia eventually closed out the match with a six-point service run."Marian is obviously a very good team," said Jim Thorpe coach Erin Kuhn. "I think our girls were a little overwhelmed, especially early on."But we eventually did some nice things. I thought Mackenzie (Walck) did a good job at the net for us. I think that was probably the bright spot."For Marian (9-0, 11-0), it was another strong performance in a year of strong performances."I was happy with our play," said Fallabel. "We have been very consistent this season. It seems like every night someone else is stepping up."I think that's a tribute to our depth and our girls' ability to stay focused."
