Summit Hill Resident reports sewage dumping

A man told Summit Hill Borough Council on Monday that he is concerned a resident living a few doors away from him is illegally disposing of sewage.

Monroe Mechling of White Bear Drive said he previously had complained about people living near him pumping sewage into their yard "and nothing was done."He said that resident might be improperly disposing of the sewage in an old tank.Councilman Bill Chapman said he has already contacted Scott Beiber of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection about the matter. He said the DEP official will be investigating the matter and if anything illegal is being done, that property owner will be cited.Chapman said he has also discussed the matter with the borough's engineer, Ronald Tirpak."I'm not in favor of these in-ground systems to begin with, especially since the water table is 3 to 4 feet below ground," Chapman said.Council President Mike Kokinda said notices of violation were sent to two property owners on May 13 and June 20.Chapman suggested that residents living in the area have their water tested since they have well water to make sure no pollution is occurring. In other business:• The council accepted the resignation of Lee Marzen as a part-time police officer.• Mayor Paul McArdle said trick-or-treat night will be held 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 30.
