Bears, Fillies do well in tournaments

Pleasant Valley and Marian had respectful showings over the weekend in girls volleyball tournaments.

VOLLEYBALLPleasant Valley at Courtney A Diacont Memorial TournamentPleasant Valley traveled to Nazareth to take part in the Courtney Anne Diacont Memorial Tournament over the weekend.The Bears finished atop of their pool beating Pius X 3-0, Pocono Mountain West 3-0 and Voorhees 2-1 before dropping a quarterfinal matchup with Liberty 0-2.Alli Markowski led the Bears with 44 assists, 18 digs and 15 aces, while Bridget Lozier added 47 kills and 12 blocks on the day.Kalli Walling (17 digs, 13 aces), Kiersten Griesback (39 assist, nine aces), Noel Kelly (16 kills, five blocks), Sara Kron (seven kills, five blocks) and Roxy Miranda (16 digs, six aces) contributed in the effort.Kron received the Courtney Anne Diacont Most Inspirational Player Award which represents an athlete who shows teamwork, sportsmanship, character & inspiring all those around her with her ability to deal with adversity in her personal life and still compete as an athlete.Marian at Parkland TournamentMarian represented themselves well at the Parkland Volleyball Tournament over the weekend. After the open rounds of play, the Fillies needed to go into a playoff with Lansdale Catholic for third place. However, they dropped the match and settled in at a respectable fourth place.Individually, the Fillies had plenty of bright spots, as Emily Pilla finished with 31 kills, 39 digs, and three aces. Abigail Stankiewitch amassed 22 kills and six blocks, while teammate Maureen Kloap had 18 kills and 29 digs. Abby O'Donnell led the way in assists with 84 total in the day's games, while also contributing 29 digs, 10 kills and six aces. Alex Stroia had 15 kills, five aces and 32 digs, as well.BOYS SOCCERJim Thorpe-CatasauquaAfter a 1-1 deadlock at halftime, Catasauqua recorded two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Jim Thorpe, 3-1 in a non-league contest.Stone Vassa scored a goal and added an assist for the Rough Riders, while Dionis Lora and Nicholas Rossnagle both tallied scores for the winners.For the Olympians, Chris Williams knotted the game up in the first half off a feed from Todd Stelling.Carter Rodriguez finished the game with 15 saves for the Olympians.In the JV game, Thorpe and Catty ended in a 2-2 deadlock.Hamburg-TamaquaThe Hawks scored three second half goals to pull out a 4-1 victory over the Blue Raiders in a non-league contest.Roberto Borrero scored the lone Tamaqua goal on a penalty kick.Hamburg outshot the Raiders (4-6) 10-5.MMI Prep-WeatherlyWeatherly posted a 2-0 non-conference win over visiting MMI Prep.Jake Stover scored the game's first goal, while Paul Eckert added the other off an assist from Kevin Dougherty.The Wreckers' keeper Nick Miller grabbed 11 saves, while his counterpart TJ Jankouskas finished with 12.CROSS COUNTRYJim Thorpe at PIAA Foundation InvitationalJonathan Condly of Jim Thorpe placed third with a time of 16:47 in the Boys Blue 5K race of the PIAA Foundation Invitational.The Olympians finished 12th in the 36 team race.GIRLS SOCCERColumbia-Montour Vo-Tech-WeatherlyKiara Connor scored both goals to help lift Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Weatherly.Shannon Frye posted 12 saves in front of the Wreckers' net, while CMVT's keeper Briana Burgess grabbed seven.Parkland-NorthwesternSarah Segan scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as the Tigers edged the Trojans 3-2 in a nonl-league game.Sabrina Mertz scored the other goal for the Tigers.Tamaqua-Pine GrovePine Grove blanked Tamaqua for a 3-0 Schuylkill League win.Rachel Edge, Adrianna Tennis and Mackenzie Lesh recorded the goals for the Cardinals.The Blue Raiders' keeper Carly Sassaman recorded 21 saves.FIELD HOCKEYPalmerton-WilsonKelly Westermann's goal was all Palmerton needed to score a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Wilson.The Warriors' keeper Rachel Torres finished with 30 saves.Bangor-NorthwesternBangor came out on top with a 3-0 Colonial League win over Northwestern.Abbi Chesney posted a first half goal for the Slaters, while Mariclena Kotretsos and Julia Kiss added second half scores.Parkland-LehightonParkland got the best of Lehighton for a 6-0 non-conference victory.Grace Royer paced the Trojans with two goals, while Brooke Sherwin and Avery Semler both added a goal and an assist.Hannah Pany and Cozette El-Kik both recorded single scores.Lehighton slips to 3-7 overall, while Parkland improves to 6-3-1.GIRLS TENNISPleasant Valley-EPC League TournamentPleasant Valley took part in their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference's league tennis tournament and had some respectable finishes.Madison Olexson lost in the quarterfinals of the number one singles draw, after she dropped an 8-2 pro set to Freedom's Flannery Johnston.In the number two doubles bracket, Nyiah Nevarez and Monica Jarog also lost in the quarterfinals, 8-3 to East Stroudsburg South's Monica Clarke and Sarah Mithani.At number three doubles, the Lady Bears' Cassi Snook and Amanda Hoag lost in the quarters to Parkland's Anna Li and Ally Brunell, while the Pleasant Valley tandem of Devin Kagel and Jessica Kolmont lost in the quarterfinals, 8-5 to Allentown Central Catholic's Julia Capece and Margaret Fleck.Overall, East Stroudsburg South ended up prevailing in the team championship, as they gathered 15 points.
