Raiders beats Haven in overtime

With the game tied at 20-apiece after regulation, both teams received a set of downs to produce points. After Schuylkill Haven's Jason Trumbo's 20-yard field goal gave the Hurricanes a 23-20 lead, it was Tamaqua's turn to step up. On a third-and-goal from the four-yard line, senior fullback Tyler Skripko made the most of the opportunity by plowing up the right middle of the 'Cane defense for the game-winning run, lifting his Blue Raiders to the 26-23 overtime win.

'I thought our kids did a great job there at the end and they got some opportunities," Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner recalled. "We missed some of those opportunities, but we converted on some, so it evened out. Skripko called his own number on that last play. We were running out of that trips and trying to spread their defense out, so they couldn't load the blocks on us. We had been running to the other side and Tyler said he thought it looked like he could get in and run away from the defense. So he kind of called his own number on that one."It proved to be the biggest play of a game that had innumerable big plays throughout. Skripko, who finished the game with 19 carries for 96 yards, scored three of his team's four TDs, proving his worth to the Blue Raider clan."Both Skripko kids are leaders and both lead the team in tackles," Bonner mentioned. "If they're not making plays for us offensively, they're blocking for us and making tackles for us and making other kids have big plays."The win, which comes one week after a devastating 7-6 loss to Jim Thorpe, couldn't have come at a more opportune time, putting them back on the winning track, and lifting them to a 2-2 mark overall (1-2 Anthracite League). In the first frame of play, both sides were struggling to reach the endzone, as the score remained 0-0 after the first. However, the locals opened up the second with a nine-play drive that spanned 76 yards and finished with Collin Moyer pounding in from the six for the early 6-0 lead.Schuylkill Haven (2-2 overall, 2-2 league), came right back with their own scoring drive that went 75 yards over the course of 14 plays that resulted in a William Casella 15-yard scoring trot. After Trumbo put in the PAT, the Hurricanes took the lead 7-6.A Blue Raider fumble gave their opponents decent field position, forcing the winners' defense to rise to the occasion, as they stalled out the ensuing drive (missed 36-yard FG) to end the half, and with the 'Canes receiving to start the second half, the Blue Raider defense forced a punt. The locals then put together a nice drive that saw Tyler Skripko push his way in from the one for a 12-7 lead. Ernie Shilko found a streaking Dylan Dannenfelser in the endzone for a 14-7 lead halfway through the third. However, Haven bounced back with a big score, as QB Ryan Fink broke a tackle and raced 50 yards for another score to tie it up at 14-all.The Blue Raiders then took 6:45 off the clock and amassed 77 yards on 16 plays and Skripko finished it off with his second one-yard score for a 20-14 edge with 8:30 left.Consecutive punts gave the ball back to the Hurricanes with 3:14 remaining and they made the most of it this time, as their next drive spanned 88 yards and saw Danny Lozada complete five of 11 passes en route to the tying score. Lozada connected with Dakota Edmondson for the TD, setting up the extra session heroics."Coming off a tough loss last week, on the road, losing by a point against a good Jim Thorpe team, we felt it was important to bounce back," Bonner reiterated. "Obviously, it would've been devastating to lose again in a close game situation."
