Marian falls to No. Schuylkill
Almost every athlete or coach would tell you that in their sports careers they wish they could have a couple games back.
That's certainly how the Marian Colts football team must feel after their 47-26 Anthracite Football League loss to North Schuylkill on Friday night. The Colts were coming into the game dominating teams on the defensive side of the ball, but they found out quickly that wasn't to be the case against the Spartans. North Schuylkill running back John Rupinski scored on Spartans first play from scrimmage in the game, taking the ball 65 yards to the end zone. After that, it was nothing but smooth sailing for the North Schuylkill offense as it ran and threw all over the Marian defense. The Spartans racked up 373 yards rushing and 153 yards passing, totaling 526 yards. The Colts were allowing just 132 yards of total offense per game coming into week four. It's safe to say that Marian simply ran into a buzzsaw."Defensively we just didn't have answer for them," said Marian coach Stan Dakosty. "I don't know how many teams are going to have an answer for them. They're so strong and physical, but it's still disappointing for us. We tried some different fronts, we tried to bring some people, we just didn't have an answer. To their credit they just lined up and said 'here we come.'"Dakosty's statement couldn't be anymore true. The Colts didn't have an answer for the Spartans big offensive line, but North Schuylkill running back John Rupinski didn't do a shabby job either. The senior rushed 33 times for a remarkable 304 yards and five touchdowns. The holes were huge, but Rupinski also gained a lot of yards after contact and used his speed to consistently break into the second tier of the Marian defense."I couldn't have done what I did tonight without the awesome play of our offensive line," said Rupinski. "They made holes, they opened it up for me, and we were able to get the win. I just feel great and my legs feel good, I'm healthy, I feel like I could still run a mile right now."Marian actually started the game on a high note when Nico Agosti took the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. The Colts made a big statement on the road against the league favorite, but Rupinski's 65-yard scamper showed that the Spartans are in fact the real deal."Our kids were hungry all week and after that kickoff return we just told our guys to relax and go out there and execute," said Hall. "That's exactly what we did, we went out there and executed that first play. Our offensive line is just playing so well. They're just such hardworkers and they're the ones out there making the holes for our offense. It's a huge advantage for us to have those guys out there and it's shows."Despite Marian's defensive woes its offense did some nice things. In fact, they kept them somewhat in the game. The Colts narrowed the Spartans lead to eight with with 6:37 left in the third when Nick Sully scored on a two-yard plunge. A pitch and catch between quarterback Ethan Kuczynski and Aaron DeAngelo set up the Sully score. However, North Schuylkill as they have shown time and time again this season that it's hard to keep a good Spartan down, scoring on their next two possessions to make it 41-20. That happened at the 11:02 mark in the fourth and obviously it was too little too late for the Colts."We need to revisit our entire defense this week," said Dakosty. "To be honest, I don't think we played that well defensively against Minersville. They controlled some drives, so that put some up some red flags. North Schuylkill obviously saw the tape and took advantage. We're going to go back to square one, this is a great bunch of kids, and we'll work hard to get better."
