Bears' Olexson reaches EPC quarters
Pleasant Valley had a strong showing on the first day of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Girls Tennis Tournament as Madison Olexson and all three doubles' teams moved on to today's quarterfinal round.
The Bears also picked up an EPC win in boys soccer.GIRLS TENNISEPC tournamentOlexson, the fifth seed in the No. 1 singles' bracket, defeated 12th-seeded Brooke Adams of Bethlehem Catholic in the Round of 16. The PV senior will face fourth-seed Flannery Johnston of Freedom in the quarters.In No. 2 doubles' action, Pleasant Valley's fifth-seeded team of Nyiah Nevarez and Monica Jarog defeated the 12th-seeded duo of Rebecca Salguerio and Caitlyn Rendon of Pocono Mountain West in their Round of 16 match. Nevarez and Jarog will face East Stroudsburg South's fourth-seeded pair of Monica Clarke and Sarah Mithani in the quarters.The No. 3 doubles' team of Amanda Hoag and Cassi Snook, also a fifth-seed, picked up an opening-match win over the 12th-seeded Rern Mawi and Karla Gallon of Allen. The Lady Bears tandem will now face Parkland's fourth-seeded team of Anna Li and Ally Brunnell.Top-seeded No. 4 doubles' pair of Devin Kagel and Jessica Kolmont dispatched the 16th-seeded team of Kayla Mercado and Naomi Caquias of East Stroudsburg South. Kiersten Griesback dished out six assists while Kalli Walling had seven digs.BOYS SOCCERWhitehall-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley bounced back from a shutout loss to an undefeated Emmaus team by dispatching Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foe Whitehall 3-0.The Bears took control early on a first half goal by Enes Nikocevic, and pulled away with second half scores from Gabe Connell and Jacob Clifford.Austin Smale made five saves in the win.FIELD HOCKEYNorthampton-LehightonRachel Heimbach scored a pair of first half goals to lead Northampton to a 3-0 victory over Lehighton in a non-league game.The Konkrete Kids, who also got a goal from Meghan Hemingway in the opening half, had a 21-10 advantage is shots and an 11-5 edge in corners.Lehighton goalies Taya Wentz and Jess Ripkey combined to make 18 saves.
