Man charged with assaulting an officer

Nesquehoning police have charged a borough man for assaulting an officer.

Walter Honshiko, 61, was charged with simple assault, persistent disorderly conduct and harassment. He was arraigned before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly and released under $5,000 unsecured bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Carl Breiner, here's what happened:At 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Breiner was dispatched to 127 W. Catawissa St., apartment six, for a complaint about loud music. He could hear the music as he approached the building. After knocking loudly on the door of the apartment for about two minutes, there was still no answer. Breiner knocked louder, and someone inside turned up the sound. After a few minutes more of knocking, a man answered the door and scolded Breiner for banging on it.Breiner explained why he was there, and asked the man for his name. The man said "Walter," and walked down the hallway, asking Breiner to come in.Walter sat down and yelled at Breiner for banging on his door. The music was still loud, so Breiner turned off the stereo. Walter's identification card listed his last name as Honshiko.Honshiko yelled at Breiner for turning off the stereo. Breiner told him several times to lower his voice so as not to further disturb the other residents, but he kept yelling. As Breiner turned to leave, Honshiko stood up and came toward him, fists and teeth clenched, telling the officer to "get out right now."Breiner told him to back off. Honshiko took a step back, but as Breiner turned to walk away, came up to him within inches, fists still clenched. Breiner again told him to back off, that he was leaving, and that Honshiko would be arrested if he kept being aggressive. Honshiko again came at Breiner, this time butting his chest against the officer's back and duty belt, where he caries his weapons.Breiner grabbed Honshiko's arm, telling him he was under arrest. Honshiko pulled away, and Breiner subdued and cuffed him. Honshiko refused to get up and walk to the cruiser, so Breiner had to call for assistance and partially carry him to the car.
