Driver escapes serious injury in rollover

A female driver was able to free herself from wreckage and crawl away from her overturned car after an early Friday morning crash near Tamaqua.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Route 209 in the Newkirk area, two miles west of town, about 6:15 a.m. for a report of a car overturned in the woods.Skid marks at the scene suggest that a Pontiac Grand Am was heading west toward Tuscarora when, for some reason, the car veered off the road, went down a low embankment, hit trees and flipped over. The car sustained severe damage but the unidentified driver was able to climb out and was being checked by paramedics at the scene.Pennsylvania State Police are investigating and details were not available.Also responding were Tuscarora and Mary D fire companies, Tamaqua Community Ambulance and Lehighton Ambulance.
