Lansford man charged with assault, robbery

Robert Clifford III, 20, of 16 W. Abbott St., Lansford, faces charges from an incident that happened Sept. 2. Clifford is charged with criminal attempt-robbery, and two counts of simple assault.

He was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, and jailed in Carbon County prison under $50,000 percentage bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jason Helmer, here's what happened:At about 6:30 p.m., Helmer was dispatched on a report of a man threatening two teenagers, one 13 and the other 16. They told him they were walking in the area of West Abbott and Coal streets when the man got out of the passenger side of a dark blue sedan and approached them. A white woman with dark hair was driving.One of the teens said he brandished a long, wood-handled object that appeared to be a sledgehammer or ax, and told her he wanted the computer tablet she was carrying. He said "I want that or I am going to beat your boyfriend's -."The man told the teens not to run, but they did anyway. They described the man has white, between 20 and 30 years old, of average height and weight, with short brown hair and a thin beard. He was wearing a blue tank top, dark sweat pants and sunglasses.Helmer spoke with Sgt. Jack Soberick, who was off-duty, but had heard a disturbance followed by two people running and a car driving off fast.The victims came to the police station the next day and said they saw Clifford's Facebook profile through a mutual friend. Helmer knew Clifford from prior incidents, and he matched the teens' description.Helmer looked at the page and saw a picture of Clifford wearing a black bandanna over the lower part of his face and wielding a hammer.He contacted Clifford's stepmother, who told him he had come home at about 1 p.m. Sept. 2 and was in and out throughout the day.Clifford later said he had gotten home from work at about 6 p.m., but later recanted and said he was home earlier.Clifford came to the station, but denied any knowledge of the tablet incident and being in a car driven by a woman.The teens were brought to the station and identified Clifford as the man who had threatened them. They also said they had seen him get into the car in an area of West Abbott Street near his house. Helmer arrested Clifford, who agreed to a search of his home.Police found the clothes he was described as wearing, and several pair of sunglasses. Clifford said he wore the clothes on Sept. 2, but continued to deny threatening the teens.Clifford's father said Clifford had a large wooden ax handle that he used to secure his bedroom door.Police also found a camouflage bag containing stolen items that had been taken during a series of thefts from vehicles in Lansford. Clifford will be charged separately in those cases.
