Colts roll

MINERSVILLE - "In order to win in this league, you have to be able to run the football," are the words of Minersville head football coach Pat Masonwhen he talks about the Anthracite Football League.

Marian outgained Minersville 245 to 108 on the ground en route to a 47-12 victory on Friday night..KJ Snerr punched in a three-yard touchdown on the Colts initial drive. The Colts thought they were getting off of the field on its first defensive appearance on the field after forcing a Battlin' Miners fourth down.Instead, Mason called some trickery and Jonathan McBreen threw a 46-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Dylan Stephen instead of punting the ball awaywhich is what everyone in the stadium including the Marian defense expected."I thought we had some momentum there but we made too many mistakes," explained Mason "Last year it was alright to make mistakes because we were young. I'm not sure if I'm getting the kids to respond to me right now. Kids make mistakes and you have to move on, that's football."Marian wasn't rattled and wasted no time responding on its next position. With just over ten minutes left in the second quarter, Colt coach Stan Dakosty decided to leave his offense on the field on a fourth and long on the Minersville 31.Dakosty's gamble paid a huge dividend, as sophomore star quarterback Ethan Kuczynski found a wide-open Snerr on a wheel route out of the backfield, down the sideline for a 31-yard strike. The Colts never looked back after the score."Ethan is playing super out there," explained the Marian coach. "He's had two great games in a row and he's playing with a lot of poise. He's putting the ball where it needs to be and we have a lot of confidence in our receivers."Most of the Marian damage was done in the second quarter, as the Colts put a 28 spot up on the scoreboard. Snerr, Nico Agosti, and Nick Sully all found the end zone. The Colts allowed one more Minersville score in the quarter as well, but went on to shut out the Miners' in the second half of action.Sully and teammate Aaron DeAngelo, whom reordered an interception in the win, were causing havoc all over the field during the entire game."I'm satisfied but we've played better and we got a little relaxed at times including giving up a special teams bust," noted Dakosty. "We're playing week by week and we just want to keep getting better."Experience on the field is what helps a program get better over time, and the Colts had a host of young players check into the game in the second half. A group of sophomores and juniors that included Anthony Collevechio, Hunter Nause, Gunnar Rehrig, Michael Neary, and Noah Goldberg all carried the ball for the Colts in the second half."Our younger guys got some time the last two weeks and that's big," said Dakosty. "Those kids are the future of our program and it's great any time you can get them into a varsity football game. You want to get your varsity guys some work, but also want to avoid injuries and get everyone in."Mason said his Minersville squad is still searching for an identity on the offensive side of the ball."We have Mahanoy next week and there's not an easy game on the schedule in this league, he noted. "We're trying to build some confidence because if you play with none, you're going to lose a lot of football games in this league. Marian is a good team that is well coached, and we'll try to rebound like men next week."
