Triple digits and counting for Segan
Northwestern forward Sarah Segan joined an illustrious group of Lehigh Valley soccer players last season.
Segan a three-time Colonial League All-Star eclipsed the coveted 100-career goals mark as a junior. And now with her final season in gold and black underway, the senior continues to open eyes across the area. She recently became the school's all-time leading goal scorer, surpassing the previous mark of 104 goals earlier this season."It definitely is an accomplishment," Segan said. "I didn't really set that as one of my main goals, but as it got nearer to that number [100], it was definitely something very cool to achieve."Not many people get to experience 100 goals throughout a career, let alone think of it as a possibility during four high school seasons. Segan did it in just three."A lot of work came into that with myself and my team," Segan said. "I couldn't have reached 100 at all without a great combination of work by the center-mids and the whole entire team."It's a bit ironic that Segan reached the 100-goal mark in the team's biggest game a year ago. In Northwestern's 4-1 District 11 Class AA championship victory over Blue Mountain, she scored numbers 100 and 101.Segan headed into her final season three goals short of tying the record. But it didn't take long for her to cement her name into the Lady Tigers' record books.During the team's 7-4 win over Moravian Academy on August 29, she posted a memorable outing even by her standards. Her five scores against Moravian gave her 106 for her career, shattering the old mark just a game into 2014."I wasn't even sure that I was at 100 to begin with, and then I didn't even know exactly what the school record was," said Segan. "I was like 'Oh, I'm three away from actually beating it.' So that was definitely something to reach for, and it was nice to get it so early in the season as well."Segan isn't one who likes putting too much emphasis on personal records. In fact, she wasn't even aware of the century mark until a few days after that district title win."I didn't even know it was my 100th goal to be honest," Segan said. "I had no idea until I heard stuff on the news."There was much of the same for her school record. No in-game celebration or anything. She was well aware of the fact, however, that she made history."I didn't know when it was going to happen, but it was definitely something that would be very cool to achieve," she said. "So I tried not to let it consume my thoughts when playing. I just kind of let it happen, and it happened to come in the first game."In my head, I knew I would have to get four. I didn't think I was going to get four that game at all…It wasn't something that we really put so much emphasis on until after it got a lot of press, which I was not really expecting at all."As a junior, she tallied 36 goals and 12 assists, after scoring a combined 65 goals in her first two seasons. She has also become a more gifted distributor with the ball. Her 12 assists last year were the most in any season for her thus far.Segan now has 109 career goals.*******CALLING ALL COACHES - Every Wednesday during the fall sports season, the TIMES NEWS will publish its annual fall sports notebook reflecting back on the week that was, and highlighting both individual and team accomplishments, as well as interesting information that may have occurred in games, matches or meets.
