Nolehi trounces Salisbury
It didn't take long for Northern Lehigh head field hockey coach Jessica Frew to find out her team wasn't looking ahead to a Thursday matchup with undefeated and Colonial League nemesis Southern Lehigh.
Just a little less than a minute and a half into Tuesday's contest with winless Salisbury on the NLHS turf, senior midfielder Erika McKay slipped the ball past Falcon goalie Meghan Williams off a corner for a 1-0 lead.It was just the beginning of a "Mercy Rule" 8-2 win for the Bulldogs to keep them unbeaten on the year.Despite dominating the first half and holding a 23-0 edge in shots on goal, the Bulldogs had just a 3-0 edge at halftime.Jessica Olewine scored two of her three goals on the afternoon before the half. With 17:45 still left before intermission, she scored off a Julie Knerr assist. Olewine then added an unassisted goal with 4:50 left."I actually had a conversation with the girls at halftime," Frew said. "The forward rolls in the game that they have to be ready for the rebounds. We were taking those first shots, but we weren't cleaning up the rebounds. That was something that we needed to focus on and make sure that when we're controlling the ball in the circle that we finish it and find the back of the net."It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to find the back of the net in the second half as Cheyenne Mazzocca scored just 55 seconds after the break to make it 4-0.The Falcons pulled starting goalie Williams and inserted Jessie Ondrovic, but it didn't make a difference.Taylor Herman put the Bulldogs ahead 5-0 off another Knerr assist with 22:23 left in the game.Just a little over two minutes later, the Falcons finally scored on a Molly Carbone unassisted goal at 20:02 on what was Salisbury's first shot on goal. The Bulldogs struck right back with 19:30 on the clock as Dakota Schweitzer scored off an assist by Olewine to make it 6-1.Haley Werkheiser added another Salisbury goal with 15:58 remaining off an assist from Mackensie Harper.Olewine, completed her hat trick 31 seconds late off a McKay assist, then McKay ended the scoring on an unassisted goal with 2:37 remaining."We definitely controlled the play of the game and we did have a lot of opportunities to score, but again the idea and goal for us is that we're making good passes and we're looking and creating opportunities to score," Frew added. "We did have enough shots so I'm definitely pleased with our performance."Both Jessie (Olewine) and Erika (McKay) are outstanding players," said Frew. "I have a lot of really great players and a real nice senior class. I just look forward to the future with them and what they're going to accomplish as a team this year."And Thursday the Bulldogs host the Spartans in a battle of Colonial League unbeaten squads."We're preparing ourself for Southern Lehigh," said Frew. "I do believe we have a team that can beat them as long as we play well together, we play sharp and we're consistent, I feel very positive about that game."The Bulldogs finished the game with a 33-3 edge in shots on goal and 21 corners to just five by the Falcons.Nolehi goalie Ronnie Green had two saves, while Green and Ondrovic combined for 25 saves for Salisbury.
