Seven first-time offenders placed in probation program

Seven first-time offenders in the criminal justice system were placed in Carbon County's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program on Friday by Judge Steven R. Serfass.

If a person successfully completes all conditions of the program, their record is wiped clean. However, if they fail to complete it, or are revoked from it, they face trial on all pending charges. A person does not admit guilt in entering the program.All were placed for a year.Edward Andrew Hernandez, 59, of Jim Thorpe, was placed on a driving under the influence charge. He was arrested on April 12 along North Street, by Jim Thorpe police. He refused a blood test and will lose his license for a year for the refusal.He was assessed $600 for the costs of the program and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, license suspended for 60 days, and render 50 hours of community service.Corey James Ligenza, 19, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on Dec. 13, 2013, along North Street, by Jim Thorpe police. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.He was assessed $600 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, license suspended for 90 days, and render 50 hours of community service.Andrea Schlegel, 24, of Lehighton, was placed on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on April 18 in the area of 332 S. First St., by Lehighton police.She was assessed $450 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Nicholas Alessandro Cavalleri, 20, of Stroudsburg, was placed on a charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on April 10 by state police at Lehighton following a vehicle stop along Trachsville Hill Road in Towamensing Township.He was assessed $450 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Eric Philip Haupt, 43, of Lehighton, was placed on a DUI charge. He was arrested on Dec. 22, 2013, by state police at Lehighton along Route 209 in Lehighton. Given a test, the result was 0.12 BAC.He was assessed $500 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and license suspended for 30 days.Samantha L. Kuntz, 25, of Lehighton, was placed on a DUI charge. She was arrested on Oct. 4, 2012, along Lehigh Avenue by Jim Thorpe police. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.She was assessed $600 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, license suspended for 60 days, and render 50 hours of community service.Jeremy Phillip Lacey, 21, of Quakertown, Bucks County, was placed on a charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on April 24 along Route 248 on-ramp at Palmerton by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop.He was assessed $450 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average about $1,500, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while in the program.
