Slatington Legion names new officers

Regardless of officers who were installed on Aug. 4, the American Legion says there is no rank among the members. Main goals are to aid families of those who were lost in wartime; to instill a sense of obligation to the community, state and nation; and to promote peace.

A POW-MIA chair is present at all meetings, which are opened by uncovering that chair.Beginning with the Sons of the American Legion, installation officers were Joe Wysochanski Jr. and Scott Baker. The commander is Brian Schoch; Gary Jacoby, adjutant; Bob Smith, first sergeant-at-arms; Conway Hughes, second sergeant-at-arms; Donald Deibert, historian; Steven Bailey, chaplain; Marc Benninger, finance officer; Mike Sutton, second vice commander; and Randy Figley, first vice commander."The Sons of the American Legion are the ones that make things happen," said their commander.Lois Giannotti, sergeant-at-arms; Linda Kistler, chaplain; Terri Miller, historian; Susan Queen, treasurer; Jeralyn Walters, secretary; Judy Burke, vice president; and Marcy Knappenberger were the auxiliary officers. Installing officer Cathy Olker said the group met its membership goal for the year.Legion Riders' officers are Jason Fisher, membership; Bonnie Lenhart, secretary; Bernie Dugan, vice president; and Herb Logan, president.Their goal is to help educate children.American Legion officers are Bernie Dugan, commander-elect; Jim Groover Jr., vice president; Don Leikel and Martin Fritz, sergeants-at-arms; Mark Queen, adjutant; Robert Churetta Sr., vice commander; David Altrichter, finance officer; Tom Beam, chaplain; Gordon Giannotti, historian; Charles Stopp, service officer; Frank Roth, judge advocate; and George Burke, retiring commander.The installing officer said, on your shoulders rests the future of the American Legion. We all strive toward the same ideals: freedom, democracy and justice.A young girl was honored for helping to place flags on the graves each year. Shelby Jewel Brazes received a framed certificate.Special guests included Mel Deisenroth, past Lehigh County commander; Cathy Olker, district president; Joe Wysochanski Jr. and Scott Baker installing officers for the Sons of the American Legion; Gordon Giannotti, deputy commander for the installation team; Mark Queen, immediate past Eastern commander; and Dave Altrichter, past Lehigh County commander.A moment of silence was requested to pay respects to departed comrades. The chaplain led a short memorial service ending with "may their souls rest in peace."
