Thorpe board rejects service contract

An agreement, unanimously rejected Monday night by Jim Thorpe School District, with the Teamsters Local 773 would have covered cafeteria and custodial personnel, according to district officials.

According to Jim Thorpe Superintendent Brian Gasper, a previous agreement expired on June 30, and is one of three contracts the district is currently negotiating. The other two involve Jim Thorpe's teachers and its administrative staff.Tuesday, the Times News incorrectly reported which contract the board acted upon Monday."It wasn't where we felt it should be," Gasper said of the Teamsters agreement turned down Monday. "I don't want to get into too much of it because this is all part of the negotiation process. Our board likely felt they could do better for the people of the district with the contract."Gasper said Wednesday morning he did not want to disclose details of the rejected agreement, choosing to wait until a contract is ratified."We're going to go back to the negotiating table," Gasper said. One thing that "muddied the waters," Gasper said, is that the district realized there could be significant savings if its food service operations and employees are managed by a private company. In May, Jim Thorpe's board voted to hire the Nutrition Group of Westmoreland County to run its food service operations under a one-year contract."There is some confusion there because initially it was thought they would be taking over all the employees and then it was believed they would only be taking over the part-time staff. We have three outstanding contracts right now and we're trying to do the best we can in getting those resolved."Jim Thorpe's teachers contract expired on June 30, 2013, while a contract for the district's administrators expired on June 30 of this year.A representative from Teamsters Local 773 could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
