Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Aug. 7 with 65 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation "Christian Love."Three guests, Anita Arcand, Ruth Nester and Nancy Thompson, were given a warm welcome. Pearl Davis was added to the sick list and Sylvia Houseman was welcomed back following an extended absence.Upcoming events include the annual picnic, Thursday at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club; an Aug. 20 trip to Mohegan Sun Casino; and flu shots during the month of September.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, on Route 54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.TEPTO to meetThe Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will meet at 6:30 p.m. today to begin making plans for the 2014-2015 school year. The meeting will be held in the Tamaqua Elementary School Library.Families of students in the Tamaqua and Rush Elementary schools are welcome to attend.West Penn VFWThe West Penn VFW will meet at 7 p.m. today. The meeting will be held at the West Penn Community Park.Peach socialA Peach Social will be held Aug. 27 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greenwood and Mauch Chunk streets. Hours will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., or until sold out.In addition to peaches and ice cream, other food items and baked goods will be available. Take outs will also be available.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church. Sunday school classes, for all ages, will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.Also on Sunday, the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Home will be held at 2:30 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m., GriefShare at 10 a.m., Playground Pals at the South Ward Playground at 11:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m.
