Freshman orientation

Stephen Toth, principal at Tamaqua Area High School, has announced that freshman orientation for the 2014-2015 school year will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school district auditorium.Parents and new students will be provided information on student schedules and activities, facilities and discipline.Tours will not be given that evening, but may be scheduled by calling 570-668-1901, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.Youth symphonyThe newly formed Anthracite Youth Wind Symphony presented its inaugural performance on Sunday at Blue Mountain High School. The group is composed of 52 high school and college age musicians from throughout Schuylkill County.The symphony is directed by Christopher Evans of Blue Mountain High School and Matt Tenaglia of North Schuylkill High School. A second performance will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday at North Schuylkill High School.St. Peter's UnionSunday worship services are held at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. This Sunday's service will include a Joyous Noise Offering. Sunday school classes are held at 10:15 a.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, softball game at 6:45 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., softball game at 6:45 p.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m.; Thursday, worship and music committee meets at 6 p.m.St. John LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.The church council will meet Monday at 7 p.m. Monday is also the deadline for items for the September issue of the Messenger.
