Swimming area at Beltzville reopens

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reopened the beach to swimming at Beltzville State Park in Carbon County, effective Friday, Aug. 8, because of safe bacterial counts in water samples from Aug. 6.

The swimming area was closed Wednesday after samples showed high bacterial counts in the water.On Thursday, Terry Brady, deputy press secretary for DCNR, said the cause of the bacteria has not been determined, but there have been no reports of any swimmers becoming ill after swimming in the lake.The Bureau of State Parks also investigated the abundance of geese around the area to see if that was the source of the problem.For more information about Pennsylvania's 120 state parks, visit the DCNR website at
