Movies in the park

The East End Playground Association will have its last "Movie in the Park" this Thursday with a presentation of "Despicable Me 2." The movie will begin at 8:30 p.m., while the concession stand will open at 7:30 p.m.Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as seating is extremely limited.The playground will also host a concert by The Cressona Band at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met July 31 with 69 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "Prayer for seniors."Members welcomed back Mike Rega and new member Tony Zahora.Upcoming events include the annual picnic, Aug. 14, at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club and flu shots during the month of September.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, on Route 54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Summer concertsThe next event in the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce's Summer Concert Series will be held Aug. 7 and will feature the Todd Wolfe Band.Concerts are held from 6 to 8 p.m., on select Thursdays, on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.Upcoming shows include: Aug. 21, BC Combo (blues); Aug. 28, Coal County Express (bluegrass); and Sept. 4, Fred Douglas (oldies).For more information, call the chamber at 570-668-1880 or email

A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church.
