Mahoning 4-H'ers have projects ready for fair

The Mahoning Valley 4-H Community Club recently held its annual club roundup at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mahoning Township.

Roundup is a chance for 4-H members to gather and display their projects for the year. Projects are judged by 4-H and community leaders during roundup, then presented and judged at the Carbon County Fair."It's a time to recognize each other and what we've done," said club president Erin McGinley. "It gives us a chance to have our projects judged before the fair, so we can make any final changes and improve our projects."McGinley said the roundup is also a good time to socialize with other members of the club, and to see what other groups have done with their projects.Perhaps most importantly, it's a time to recognize the leaders who helped to make these projects possible.Longtime leader Kay Gilbert, who has worked with the community club for more than 30 years, was on site and thanked for her decades of service as the club's gardening project adviser. This was the first year she was unable to lead a group project, but she reminded the members that she is always available to help.Sewing, quilting and woodwork projects were presented at roundup through a fashion show and woodworking display.Other project groups included basketry, entomology, gardening, pet pals, scrapbooking and shooting sports.Parents and members were given time to look over projects before the fashion and woodworking show. They were treated to a sampling of completed baskets and scrapbooks, and dozens of pinned insects from the entomology group.Several groups will do work for the fair in addition to their roundup projects. The gardening club is completing a large group exhibit, which will be on display at the fairgrounds.Four members of the quilting group have completed blocks for the adult quilt block contest, and parents and members were encouraged to stop by the quilt block contest and vote for the viewer's choice award. All proceeds from the viewer's choice award will benefit breast cancer research. The Carbon County Fair will open on Monday on Little Gap Road in Palmerton.
