Carbon man facing multiple charges

A Carbon County man is facing multiple charges following an incident in Nesquehoning that occurred Wednesday.

Borough police said at 7:34 p.m. officers Brian White and Robert Blisard were dispatched for a stolen vehicle at 155 E. Catawissa St.A 1998 blue Ford Ranger pickup was stolen.A description of the vehicle was transmitted to all area police departments. Jim Thorpe officer Matthew Swartz spotted the vehicle a short time later along Route 209 and was following it.A traffic stop was initiated by Swartz but the driver refused to stop.A short chase ensued and the driver finally stopped in the area of Le Quatro Restaurant in Nesquehoning.Immediately upon stopping, the driver attempted to run off. He was apprehended and physically subdued.He was identified as Samuel James Heydt, 36, of 194 W. Coal St., Nesquehoning.Police called an ambulance to the scene to check Heydt for any injuries. He was then cleared by medical personnel.In the process officers noted the strong odor of alcohol on Heydt.He was placed under arrest and transported to St. Luke's Hospital-Miner's Campus in Coaldale for a blood test. After the test was administered, he was taken to the borough police station.He waived his Miranda rights and stated to officers that he had "borrowed" the pickup to go and get high.During a search, two wax packets were found on him.Heydt admitted they contained heroin, and a test confirmed that, police said.As a result, Heydt was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, fleeing or attempting to elude police, two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, careless driving, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, and drivers required to be licensed.Police said he was committed to the county prison following arraignment on the charges.
