Water main repair project a major job in Tamaqua

The project to repair a water main serving portions of the Dutch Hill section of Tamaqua is proving to be an extensive operation.

The 30-inch main is located in a steeply-sloped, wooded mountainside alongside a section of Elm Street commonly called Snake Hill.According to workers on scene, the borough first had to cut down large trees and then build a temporary but substantial road to access the site with heavy equipment.Work has been underway since the middle of July.On Tuesday, the Tamaqua Area Water Authority issued a water boil advisory for parts of Dutch Hill. The advisory will remain in place until the work is completed and tests have indicated that the water is safe to use.

Tamaqua Borough workers and subcontractors, seen in the background, continue with excavation and repairs of a 30-inch water main located in the woods near Snake Hill. But to access the site, trees had to be cut down and a temporary roadway created, seen here.
