Penn Forest Township Insurance lapse closes municipality for a day

Friday was an unexpected day off for Penn Forest Township employees and fire fighters. Late Thursday someone contacted the township and informed them that their worker's compensation insurance had lapsed.

"We really don't have any answers at this time, I don't want to say anything with out being sure exactly what happened," said Township Supervisor Warren Reiner. "We will be looking into the matter further on Monday and hope to have a better understanding of what caused the cancellation of the policy.""At this time I can tell you that we have purchased a new policy from a different carrier and as of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 26 everyone is covered and back to work," Reiner said.Volunteer fire fighters are not technically township employees, but fire fighters are covered under the township's worker's compensation insurance in the event that they are injured while fighting a fire. The township was quick to act when they were notified of the problem. Under mutual aid agreements the township was covered by Jim Thorpe and Kidder Township fire companies.
