Palmerton Area Library's chain is growing

The Palmerton Area Library Summer Reading Book Chain Contest is in full swing.

This contest is open to everyone, from preschoolers through adults. For each book you read this summer, add a link to the growing colored paper chain.So far over 1,500 books have been read. There are five different colors. Each color represents an age group.The contest will continue until Sept. 1 when three lucky readers in each age category will receive prizes from the library. B104 radio station will also give away an iPad. There is still time to sign up.The chain is draped several times over the balcony's balustrade and is the first thing visitors see when they enter the library."The chain encourages people to read over the summer," said Diane Danielson, library director."People like competitions and this is a fun competition between adults and children. We have 600 people signed up. Plus, everybody loves looking at it. It brightens up the library."The library will be hosting a giant basket auction and book sale beginning Aug. 1-Sept. 13.All baskets are donated by library friends and members of the board of directors and are worth at least $35 each.The book sale will include everything in the basement book sale with over 2,000 books, puzzles, and movies. The library staff will hand out bags and customers may purchase everything they can fit in the bag for $2.This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the library.The Knitting Club continues to meet during the summer months on the first and third Mondays of each month from 6-8 p.m. Learn to knit or crochet or if you need help with a project or just enjoy getting together with other people who love needlework this is for you. It is free and open to all.The Sew What Quilt Guild meets at the library on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. New members and visitors are always welcome. Please use the side door.New computer classes will be starting in the fall at the library. Dates are not set yet but interested people should call the library to get their names on the waiting list since class sizes are limited.Yoga classes are offered every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Call the teacher at 570-436-1762 for more information or stop in on Saturday morning.Preschool Story Hour will start again at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 5 and continue every Friday during the school year. This program is free and open to all.
