in West PennThe West Penn Lions and Lioness clubs will sponsor the annual West Penn Senior Fun Day on Aug. 2 at the West Penn Park. Activities will begin at 11:30 a.m.The event is open to all township residents age 62 and older and will be held rain or shine.The day will include free entertainment, free food (lunch and supper) and lots of fellowship.Preregistration is required to ensure there is enough food to go around. To register, call Melissa at 570-386-4138 no later than July 25.Rush taxesThe office of Rush Township Tax Collector Dolores Walck will be closed the evening of July 30. The office will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. that morning.Artist receptionThe Tamaqua Community Art Center will sponsor a meet and greet reception for artist Irene Miller from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.Miller is from Hazleton and works in the water color medium. Her work has been displayed at Hazleton's "First Night" event and at the restaurant in the Hazleton Boscov's.In addition to the meet and greet, Miller will be teaching a class at the art center on Aug. 7.For more information on the art center or any of its events, visit

Norma Lee Burke provided the invocation, "Take My Hand."Pat Johnson was added to the sick list. A thank you card from the family of Jayne Myers was read and a moment of silence was held for the victims of the plane crash in Russia.Upcoming activities include: trip to Shady Maple on July 28; annual picnic will be held Aug. 14 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, located on Route 54 (east) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Summer concertsThe next event in the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce's Summer Concert Series will be July 24 and will feature Gene Morrison Family and Friends. A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church. Sunday school classes, for all ages, will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.Also on Sunday, the Christian education commission will meet at 11:45 a.m. at the YMCA; and the care and connection, operations and outreach commissions will meet at 12:30 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m., GriefShare at 10 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m.
