Hearing waived in baby's death

A Tamaqua couple charged in the death of their 6-week-old son had their preliminary hearings scheduled before District Judge Stephen Bayer on Tuesday.

Alyssa Shellhammer, 23, and Joseph Kuhla, 22, both elected to waive their hearing and will now await a hearing date in Schuylkill County Court.Shellhammer and Kuhla were charged with endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment in connection with the sudden, unexpected death of their son, Bronx, on Feb. 5.The charges were filed by Tamaqua Police Cpl. Henry Woods.According to court papers filed by Woods, officers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to 307 Arlington St. at 2:30 a.m. onFeb. 5 for an unresponsive child.Bronx was not breathing when emergency responders arrived, and attempts were made to revive him.Ambulance personnel then transported the baby to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale, where Bronx was declared dead a short time later. In the first interviews Woods conducted with the parents, Shellhammer said Bronx was sleeping in a pack-and-play and she discovered him not breathing when Kuhla woke up to use the bathroom.Kuhla initially corroborated that account, but later told investigators the couple had placed the baby in bed with them and their three other children. When one of the children started crying, he went to use the bathroom. Shellhammer then discovered the unresponsive infant and they called 911.Shellhammer admitted having the baby in the overcrowded bed, saying she awoke to find one of the other children with their head on the baby's stomach. The police report notes the parents had been advised of proper sleeping arrangements for newborns, with shared beds not recommended due to the risk of accidental death.
