Discard expired, unwanted pills at police station

As the current trend indicates, prescription drug abuse is on the rise not only in Pennsylvania, but the entire nation.

To help counteract that growing epidemic, a secure medicine return box is now available to people who wish to dispose of unwanted and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. One such spot is inside the Palmerton Police Station, where as of Tuesday, a PA MedReturn Drop Box has been stationed inside, according to borough police Chief Randy Smith.Smith said the drop box is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to individuals who wish to drop off any medications or similar materials."They can drop their medications off in the box, no questions asked," Smith said. "All they must do is read the instructions and obey the instructions on the box."What's accepted are prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples, and medications for pets.Items not accepted are hydrogen peroxide, thermometers, inhalers, needles (sharps), aerosol cans, medication from businesses or clinics, or ointments, lotions or liquids.Smith said the box was obtained through the Carbon County District Attorney's office via a grant through the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association."People who are on prescription medications need to keep a close watch on them and keep them out of the hands of young children," he said. "The days of flushing them down the toilet are over."Once the items are dropped off, Smith said they will be disposed of by the proper means.Drop boxes are also located at police stations in Jim Thorpe, Lansford, Lehighton, Mahoning Township and Weatherly. For more information, visit
