Stolen tablet results in two men charged

A Lansford man admitted stealing a $300 computer tablet from a local restaurant, then sold it for $15 to buy food and cigarettes, police say.

Kyle Nalesnik, 27, was charged by borough police with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. But the charges, filed on May 30, were withdrawn on July 2 after the tablet was returned.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jason Helmer, here's what happened:At 10:41 p.m. May 1, Helmer was called to Our Place restaurant on Centre Street to investigate a theft.He spoke with owners Matthew and Marilyn Fisher, who told him a Samsung Galaxy computer tablet, worth about $300, had been taken from a table at 1:40 p.m.Nalesnik had come into the restaurant at about that time and asked to use the phone. Surveillance video showed Nalesnik, who lives next door, taking the tablet and putting it down the front of his pants.Helmer spoke to Nalesnik, who admitted taking the device and selling it to a Richard Berger, also of Lansford, for $15 so he could buy food and cigarettes.Berger initially denied having the device, but later brought it to the police station."Here. I don't want some kid being without their tablet," he told police, according to the affidavit.Berger, 55, was charged with receiving stolen property, a misdemeanor.
