Towamensing Yankees win title

So often, big games are about seizing the moment.

Towamensing wasted little time doing just that in Game 3 of its Keystone Senior Babe Ruth championship series against Franklin. The Yankees took advantage of an opportunistic offense and a dominant pitching performance en route to a 9-0 win and their first ever title. After winning the opening contest but falling in Saturday's second game, the significance of the rubber match was not lost on the Towamensing players."We knew that this was do-or-die, that this was 'that game,'" said starting pitcher Cody Peters, who was nearly flawless in tossing a complete game shutout. "We knew that it was time to show up and do our best and give our best effort. For a lot of the guys on the team, we know that we're done after this season and that we're not going to get a chance to play ball ever again. So this one really meant a lot."The Yankees took the drama out of the game early, scoring four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of several Shocker mistakes."When a team jumps out on you like that, they just take the momentum right away," said Franklin coach Donnie Rehrig. "We walked the first two guys (in the inning), they got a hit, and then we had a case of throwing the ball around."We just had our backs against the wall, and we were playing our fourth game in four days. The kids get up for every game. But when a team comes out and scores four runs, it kind of deflates your balloon and hurts morale."Despite the quick start, which also included runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 6-0 cushion, Towamensing coach Don Hunter knew his team couldn't get too comfortable."You can never have too many runs," he said. "You still have to worry because you know how good this team (Franklin) is. They're a very good team, and I knew that there was always a chance they could come back."But Peters never let the Shockers get comfortable at the plate, recording nine strikeouts while not allowing a hit or base runner until the fourth inning."I think the key for us in this series was our pitching, and the fact that we had five kids that really could be called No. 1 starters, and Cody was one of them," said Hunter. "We have a lot of great pitching, and I'm really happy with the way Cody did it today."Franklin looked like it might have a chance to rally in the fifth, when Brady Niehoff and Jordan Knappenberger both collected one-out singles. But Peters settled down, recording consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.Towamensing put it out of reach in the sixth when Garrett Krome laced a two-run triple to make it 8-0. Isaac George followed with an RBI single that scored Krome and made it 9-0.In all, the Yankees had seven different players score runs, further proof that the win was a team effort."It means the world to get it with this group," said Krome, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. "I've been playing with these guys since I was young, and I've been playing against these Franklin guys since I was 10 or 11."And there's a little bit of a rivalry there, with Palmerton and Lehighton. So it really means a lot to beat them with this team. It's really satisfying."While understandably disappointed with the result, Rehrig knows his team has a lot to be proud of after all it accomplished during the regular season."I'm very proud of them," the coach said. "We had a great year and they have nothing to hang their heads about. We were regular season champs and 16-3."In the end, there can only be one winner and it wasn't us. But they have nothing to be ashamed of."Towamensing 401 103 0 - 9 8 1FT Shockers 000 000 0 - 0 5 4Peters and George; Cordova, Tay. David (4), Farano (6). W - Peters.
