Grant available for playgrounds

Lower Towamensing Township could apply for a grant to spruce up one of its playgrounds.

While no formalaction was taken, thetownship's board of supervisors on Tuesday discussed the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program.Supervisors Chairman Brent Green said the township could apply for a $35,000 grant that, if received, would be used to buy benches and mulch for the Aquashicola Playground. The grant may be used on projects that involve development, rehabilitation and improvements to public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails and river conservation.Green noted a 15 percent local match of the total project cost is required.Supervisor Ron Walbert said he wasn't certain that was the direction the township should head in."My concern is we have to match 15 percent; that's $5,000," Walbert said. "We need to finish what we've got started down there."Walbert was referring to the Stoney Ridge Recreation

P.A.R.C.A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the park in June 2009.The township purchased the land from the Knights of Columbus in 2000.Act 13 of 2012 establishes the Marcellus Legacy Fund and allocates funds to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects using the GTRP.Green said the application deadline for the program is July 21.In other business, supervisors unanimously agreed to:• Grant conditional approval to the Tom Ring subdivision plan, and also approved a waiver for the plan.• Grant an extension to AT&T until Oct. 31 to erect a cell tower in the township.• Set a timeline of 30 days for applicants to pick up security deposits for rentals at the Stoney Ridge

P.A.R.C. In addition, supervisors agreed to send letters to individuals giving them five days to pick up security deposits for prior rentals that have not yet been picked up.
